Orache (Atriplex halimus) is a halophyte shrub (which grows in salty ground) 1.5 to 2 m tall from the Amarantaceae family. The leaves are small, petiolate, oval in shape, silver gray in color on both sides. The stems and leaves are covered with small scales which give a velvety appearance. The monoecious flowers, yellowish in color, are gathered in spikes, the male flower with five tepals and the female in two pre-leaves, yellowish in color, are gathered in spikes. The seeds are red. There are between 250-300 species.
Flowering: from August to September.
Other names: halime arroche, purslane and marine arroche; (G’taf) in Arabic and « arroche marine » in french langage.
The plant is often planted to form windbreak hedges on the coast.
Plant native to southern Europe, which is found in the countries of North Africa and the Near and Middle East. In Algeria, it is found in the regions of m’sila, Relizane, senia (Oran) and el Mesrane (djelfa). This shrub is a common plant in the desert (Sahara) and is frequently used as fodder for animals.
Components: The leaves are rich in proteins and iodine, gum, vitamins C, A and D and in chromium, saponins, oxalic acid, carotene and trace elements (iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus and calcium) throughout the plant.
The virtues of the plant: diuretic, tonic, stimulant, emollient, anti depression, anti fatigue and anti-inflammatory.

be careful the plant is a little salty for hypertensives. therefore it should be washed.
